Minorities Development & Welfare (MDW) Directorate

The Directorate of Minorities Development & Welfare (MDW) as a part of MA & ME Department plans, programmes, formulate policies of the Government relating to the development and welfare of the minorities of this state.
This directorate under the MA&ME Department plays a pivotal role in executing a no. of major schemes / programmes of this department thereby benefiting people belonging to minority communities across the state.

Major Functions

Destitute Minorities Women Rehabilitation Programmes. The objective of the scheme to provide shelter to the destitute minority women. Each beneficiary is provided with 1.2 lakhs financial assistance for construction of house. Eligible beneficiaries are selected at the district level.

Construction of boundary wall surrounding public graveyards, Idgah : The objective of the scheme to provide financial assistance for construction of boundary walls around public graveyard, idgah used by public with a view to safeguard and prevent encroachment and trespassing.

Integrated Minority Development Programme (IMDP): With a view to extend development works in non-MsDP districts having substantial minority population (20%-25%), this scheme was introduced in 21 blocks in 13 districts by the State Government. During the last five years, works similar to MsDP involving Rs. 378 Crore has been taken up in these districts.

Different other schemes taken up are as follows: Construction of AWC, health sub-centre, drinking water facilities, connecting roads, ACR for Madrasahs and school having substantial minority students percentage etc. under MDW schemes.

Our Achievements

Integrated Minority Development Programme (IMDP): With a view to extend developmental works in non-MsDP districts having substantial minority population (20%-25%), this scheme has been introduced 21 blocks of 13 districts by the State Government. During the last five years works similar to MsDP has been taken up involving Rs. 378 Cr. in these districts.
Housing: To improve the quality of life of minority communities in West Bengal and to fulfil the commitment of the State Government for providing “Shelter to All” – 1,86,496 units of housing have been constructed at a cost of Rs. 1,871 crore under various housing schemes. In 2018-19, MA & ME Department has provided a record number of 33,306 houses to destitute minority women. The target for the year 2019-20 is more than 36,000.
Boundary wall for graveyards: Protection of the public graveyards, mazars and dargas and safeguarding the same from encroachment and defilation was taken up. A total of 5,192 such boundary walls have been taken up so far. Total fund release is around Rs. 563 Cr.
